Characters in The Pearl
Kino: Kino is an indian pearl diver. He lives in a village in the town of La Paz, Mexico. He dives for pearls to earn money for his family. He has a canoe that was passed down from many generations before, and he was the one that found the pearl. He is very determined to sell the pearl to get his son, Coyotito, to school, have a rifle, and have a church wedding.
Juana:Juana is Kino’s wife and Coyotito’s mother. She is the wisest one in the family because she knows how to cook, ace care of Coyotito, etc. She knows what is good and bad, and tries to tell Kino. She is a very helpful and wise woman.
Coyotito: Coyotito is Kino and Juana’s first son. He is stung by a scorpion at the beginning of the story, and doesn’t know anything about what is going on, making him very innocent. And at the end of the book, he gets shot in the head by trackers that thought he was a coyote.
The Doctor: The doctor is very cruel to Indian/Mexican people, for example pretending to cure Coyotito but instead poisoning him, and used to live in France. He only likes and wants to help rich people.
The Buyers: The buyers wanted to cheat Kino into giving them the pearl for a price that isn’t near how much the pearl is worth. They are greedy for money and Kino dislikes them very much. The buyers want the pearl so badly, that they send the trackers after the poor family, and at the end, kill Coyotito.
